About Swish Dental

Protect your teeth with dental mouth guards

Sports and exercise are an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but many activities can put your teeth at risk of serious injury, from chips and cracks to getting knocked out completely.

If you or your child play contact sports like rugby, soccer or hockey or take part in other energetic activities such as cycling, skateboarding or dancing, we recommend wearing a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth and avoid the need for dental treatments. Most of the cost of your mouthguard will usually be covered by your health fund or other benefits.

What is a mouthguard?

Mouthguards are oral devices made from strong but flexible plastic that fit over your teeth. A custom mouthguard provided by our dentists is designed for a close and comfortable fit, unlike mouthguards bought from a store that offer less protection.

We recommend that you or your child wear a mouthguard during any activity with lots of physical contact that puts your teeth at risk of impact or injury – whether it's from a ball, other players or trips and falls.

Mouth guard for teeth grinding

If you or your child grind your teeth at night, we may recommend that you wear a dental splint. This is a special type of mouth guard for teeth grinding that's worn at night and prevents your teeth from coming together.

Will a mouthguard affect my performance?

A custom-fitted mouthguard shouldn't have any impact on your athletic performance. However, a poorly-fitting mouthguard may cause problems if it affects your breathing or feels uncomfortable.

Can I wear a mouthguard with braces?

Yes – in fact, we recommend it! If your braces get damaged, they can be expensive to repair and this can disrupt your orthodontic treatment. We can design a sports mouth guard that fits comfortably over your braces to give you the protection you need.

How can I look after my mouthguard?

You should clean your mouthguard after every use and store it in a cool, dry place where the material won't warp and go out of shape. We can check your mouthguard every time you visit us and replace it if it's damaged or your mouth changes shape.

How are mouthguards made?

If you think a mouthguard sounds like a good idea, we'll first give you a complete oral health assessment to check that your teeth and gums are healthy or if there are any problems that need to be treated first.

We can then take an impression (mould) of your top teeth and send this to an off-site dental laboratory. They'll design and manufacture your custom mouthguard to be the perfect fit for your teeth. You can also choose the colour of the mouthguard, if you have a preference.

We'll call you back for a fitting appointment when your mouthguard is ready and delivered to us, usually around a week later. You can test it out and see if any adjustments need to be made, then it's ready to use whenever you need it.

What are the risks?

A custom-fitted mouthguard can prevent dental injuries or reduce their severity, making it an important preventive measure. However, a poorly-fitting mouthguard bought from a store may not offer the same level of protection, and could even cause more problems if it slips or gets lodged in your throat.

How much does a mouthguard cost?

Mouthguards are recommended by the dental industry and are usually covered in part by health funds or other benefits such as the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), if the mouthguard is for a child under 17. Some health funds cover 100% of the cost so pop in and we can give you a quote.

We'll tell you more about the costs and our insurance and payment options when you visit us for your consultation.
